Apex Brewing Co bespoke Shopify development
Independent brewery and ecommerce
Apex Brewing Co is an independent Dorset brewery near Sherborne with a brand that refuses to blend in. It is a strong example of the bespoke web design and Shopify development we provide across Dorset. The website needed to carry that same energy without making the shopping experience harder to use.
Blunt Notion developed a bespoke Shopify theme from supplied creative designs, turning them into a responsive ecommerce website for beer, merchandise, gifts, events and the brewery’s growing direct-to-customer operation.

A full-throttle Shopify website for petrolhead brewers in Dorset.
Apex already had strong creative direction. The difficult part was not making another attractive brewery website; it was translating a highly individual design into Shopify without sanding off the personality or compromising the mechanics underneath it.
Customers needed clear routes into beer, merchandise, gifts and events. The Apex team needed manageable products and content. The technical structure also had to account for stock, orders and the external brewery systems that may need to connect with the store as the business develops.
That creates a useful tension: the front end should feel loud, fast and specific to the brand, while the shopping journey should remain familiar enough that customers can browse, choose and check out without having to decipher the design first.
Blunt Notion’s role was to make the supplied creative work behave as a responsive, maintainable and commercially useful Shopify website.
What the Shopify build covered.
- Review and technical interpretation of the supplied designs
- Ecommerce information architecture and customer journeys
- Bespoke Shopify theme development
- Responsive front-end development across desktop, tablet and mobile
- Product, collection and merchandising structure
- Content sections for the brewery, events and visitor information
- Shopify editor configuration for practical day-to-day management
- Planning around stock, orders and future brewery-system integrations
- Baseline SEO structure, including page titles and meta descriptions
- Cross-device testing and launch support
Structure before decoration.
A strong visual design cannot compensate for a confused shop structure. Before treating the supplied screens as finished pages, we considered how customers would move between beer, mixed selections, merchandise, gifts, events and information about the brewery.
Collections and navigation needed to reflect the way people actually shop while leaving room for the Apex catalogue and visitor offer to grow. The result is a store that can be visually expressive without hiding the products behind the expression.
A bespoke Shopify theme.
Apex did not need a marketplace theme with its colours changed. The supplied designs contained distinctive compositions, typography, image treatments and automotive references that required a tailored front end.
This was bespoke website development rather than a reskinned theme. Blunt Notion developed the front end around the supplied designs and Shopify’s underlying content and commerce model. Reusable sections give the Apex team practical control over content, while the templates preserve the intended visual system across desktop, tablet and mobile.
Commerce without the generic-store feeling.
The website still has to perform familiar ecommerce jobs: organise products, help customers compare options, communicate what they are buying and move them towards checkout. Those conventions were retained where they help the user, then expressed through the Apex visual language.
The live store now provides routes into beer, merchandise, gifts, Build a Box, mini kegs, events and trade orders. That breadth matters because the website represents more than a shelf of individual cans; it supports several parts of the brewery’s commercial operation.
Planned beyond launch.
Brewery ecommerce rarely exists in isolation. Product information, stock, fulfilment and orders may also pass through specialist operational systems. The Shopify structure therefore had to be considered as part of a wider operational setup, rather than treated as a sealed website.
Future integration requirements were accounted for during technical planning so the store would not be needlessly boxed into a short-term implementation. As those requirements develop, they can be assessed against a clearer product, content and order structure.
A distinct storefront
The finished theme preserves the energy of the Apex creative direction instead of making the brand fit a generic ecommerce template. The result looks and behaves like Apex rather than a brewery using Shopify’s default visual language.
Clear commercial routes
The live website gives customers direct routes into beer, merchandise, gifts, Build a Box and mini kegs, while also supporting events, trade orders and information about the brewery. Different customer intentions have a deliberate place in the structure.
Practical content control
Products, collections, editorial sections and event content can be managed through Shopify rather than hard-coded into static pages. The team can keep the website active without asking a developer to make every routine change.
Room to develop
The store provides a maintainable base for new products, visitor experiences and further operational integration. It is a live platform that can be extended as the brewery changes, not a fixed campaign page built around launch day.
What Apex Brewing Co said.
Kieron is so easy to work with, he over delivers, really knows his stuff, and is on hand to make the launch of your new website smooth and stress free. He built some cool little bespoke features into the new brewery project he worked on with me.

Creative Shopify development without the theatre.
This project demonstrates the part that is often missing between an ambitious design and a successful launch: somebody still has to make the thing work.
That means understanding Shopify’s templates and data, preserving the design at responsive sizes, structuring the catalogue sensibly, considering the editor experience and recognising where the store meets the rest of the business.
Blunt Notion can work from an existing brand and supplied designs, or bring website planning and design into the same project where required. The recommendation depends on what already exists and what will produce the strongest result—not on forcing every client through the same process.
If your Shopify project needs more than a purchased theme and a pile of apps, show us the designs, the existing store or the commercial problem. We will tell you what the sensible build looks like.
